My Donor
I spent around 5 weeks looking for a donor. I'd almost given up on finding
an Escort and had started to find out as much as possible about Sierra
donors when I spotted the following advert in "Scot-Ads" under
Collectors' Cars on 01/03/02.
"Escort 1300 GL, 1980, two careful owners, vinyl top, Taxed March,
61,700 miles, requires welding and some TLC, offers when seen......
Grangemouth".
I rang the number and an elderly lady answered. I asked if it was still for
sale and she said yes and that she was the seller. I asked if it was a Mk2
Escort and she wasn't sure. I guessed that because it was 22 years old with
a vinyl roof it must be a Mk2 and arranged to view it at 5.30 that
evening.
Due to a power outage in the area of Glasgow my office is based in, I
left work early and arrived at 4.45 and saw a Silver and rust coloured Mk2
Escort on the driveway. The owner explained that her brother bought it new
and she had used it daily for the last 9 years. It had been patched up
regularly by a local garage but had reached a stage where it wasn't worth
fixing. The garage had supplied her with a small Japanese hatchback and had
advised her that the car could be sold as a "collectors' item".
I tried my best bartering act, but she explained that the car was exactly 22
years old that day and that someone had previously followed her for 6 miles
to her sister's home in an attempt to purchase the car. Eventually £75 changed
hands and I was the proud new owner of the car.
I left my Audi A4 outside her house and drove the Escort back home. I hadn't
driven an Escort since 1987. I had forgot how bad they were! I pulled
up on my drive and when my 5 year old son saw the car he burst in to tears
because he thought I'd sold the Audi!
